Figure 1 – The nuclear battery developed by Alcatel for Medtronic used a tiny slug of metallic Plutonium 238. The heat produced by the decay of the Pu-238 was converted to electricity by a thermopile. Figure 2 – In a thermocouple, a voltage - the thermoelectric EMF - is created in the presence of a temperature difference between two different metals or semiconductors.

Historical Use of Pu-238 Pu-238 has been used in most space missions since the early days of Apollo RTGs still function on the lunar surface RTGs are on the farthest man-made object, Voyagers 1 and 2, now near 100 AU from Earth RHUs are on the rovers on Mars Domestic Production Ceased in 1988 Historic Process Flow for Pu-238 Production and Recovery Product is plutonium dioxide powder with an isotopic content of Pu-238 greater than 80%. Each production cycle converts 10-15% Np-237 to Pu-238 with remainder of Np recycled. Target Fabrication Target Irradiation Dissolve Np-237 in acid Purify to remove decay products – reduce dose Heat Energy = 0.023 MeV/nucleon (0.558 W/g Pu- 238) Natural decay rate (87.7 -year half-life) • 3000 K Stagnation Temperature H2 O2 H 2O/O2 H 2O H 2O/O2 GO2 LN2 Particles of Plutonium over 1 millimeter diamter will spontaneously ignite at about 500 C. In humid and room temperature Plutonium will react with Oxygen and form plutonium dioxide. Non-divided Plutonium metal at room temperature will corrode and slowly oxidize. Plutonium-238 Half-life: 87.74 years The heat produced by decaying Pu-238 is used as the heat source with a thermocouple. As can be seen in Fig. 2, fins serve as heat sinks to create a voltage across the thermocouple.

The only radioisotope that has consistently met the basic criteria is plutonium-238, which has a half-life of 88 years and a high power density, and has proven to be a very dependable and safe heat source on more than two dozen U.S. space missions over the past 50 years.

Perhaps the best known radioisotope for RTG use is plutonium 238, or 238Pu. Its practical use after discovery was pioneered by the Mound Laboratories in the 1950s, who were the providers of many different radioisotopes, as well as radioisotope powered systems of many sorts.
